Abstract

The main subject of the article was the amphora finds, during the excavations and researches carried out in the ancient city of Tripolis between 2012-2019. An amphorae typology of the city was formed by examining the sherds by analogy and three main groups were seen classified as imported, local and undetermined. Among the groups, the first rank is local, the second rank is imported, and the third rank is unclassifiable amphorae. Amphorae have been found in almost every building excavated in the city. As a result of the analogy studies, a total of 24 different amphora types were identified, 15 of which were imported amphorae, 3 of them local amphorae and 6 of them unclassified amphorae. The result of the examination of the amphorae types, show that are from West Mediterranean, are from North Africa, are from East Mediterranean, are from Black Sea, are from Islands-Aegean, are from Western Anatolia, are from Lykos Valley and of them originate from the Meander Valley. Based on the amphorae finds, we can say that the city has established significant commercial relations with both overseas and regional cities. Beginning from the 4th century AD, the use of amphorae and the variety of types increased in the city. But from the beginning of the 7th century AD, there is a noticeable decrease in variations.
